Elk River Special

Back to the Gear Room

Feb 17, 2009 7:10 AM GMT

A few days ago, I received my Elk River Special from fellow HarmonicaSpace member and supporter David Payne. It is a customized harp based on a Seydel Soloist. I don't have a stock Soloist to compare, but it is quite modified, with beautiful rounded corners and lots of special touches. I've had the chance to break it in some and to play it in different genres. It strikes a great balance between ... I'm not sure these are the technically correct terms ... clean note stability and bendability. It sounds wonderful and feels great.

Good stuff!

Nice to hear people talking about Dave Payne and Elk River Harmonicas.

Maybe you should post some pics and sound clips of them for folk to drool over!! :)

Kingley --

I will try to post some pictures. I really want to start getting some clips together but that might take a bit longer. I've been busy with work, and thankfully, some jams lately.

Dave, I'm loving this harp even more than posted above. I still haven't taken a picture of it, but I will.

Dave --

You also know what it sounds like! How about some audio from you on it? I'm teasing, I want to post some audio on this site, but I don't have my recording rig right yet.

All I know about how it sounds is from me playing it, wanted to hear what it sounded like with somebody at the helm who knows what he is doing (P.S., lol, there is audio on my profile)

Not ready for audio, but I finally have a couple of photos. I did any and all scratches.

How does the Blues Soloist differ from the Blues Session?

Mar 06, 2009 5:07 PM GMT
Elk River Replied:

Seydel has two basic profiles they've used since the 1800s. The Session has pretty wide reeds, the Solist has narrow reeds, they are actually narrower than a Marine Bands.

The Solist is wood sandwich construction, Session is recessed reedplate plastic. Solist has coverplates like the old, handmade Blues Harps. THe Session has what I always call the Meisterklasse shape.

Drew, looking at that pic... that harp could use some coverplate supports. If I send you some long screws, nuts, lock washersand destructions could you put em in?

Dave ---

I certainly would try to put those supports in! Thanks!
