Hi HS peeps,

I'm up late irresponsibly looking to spend some money on Amazon and I'm seeking your advice about chromatic harmonicas as I am finally ready to break into it. What keydo yourecommend starting out with? What keydo you find most versatile for Blues? Other styles? What key(s) do you have? Which do like best? Any other tips about getting into chromatic playing? Thanks for your time.

Barbeque Bob M Replied:

With chromatics, start off with C, but I also use Bb, F, and G. William Clarke also used these too for blues as I do. One of the first things to remember about chromatics is that they do NOT respond well to being played hard and breath control is an extremely important matter when playing them. Don't even think of doing heavy bends on one as they generally can only be bent 1/4 step flat MAX, and trying to go further and/or playing them harder to force it to happen, they will blank out on you in a NY minute. Chromatics and diatonics are very different animals.
